Making notes on Un Chien Andalou:
1) How much cutting is there and why?
This clip involves alot of cutting to change from scene to scene, there are a series of images and quick cuts with no relation to eachother which hints at the fact that the short film is surrealistic.

2) Are the shoots highly fragmented or relatively lengthy?
The shoots are highly fragmented because the film is only short and it quickly changes from one scene to the next, changing the shoot very frequently.

3) What is the point of the cutting in each scene? To clarify? TO stimulate? To lyricize? To create suspense? To explore an idea or emotion in depth?
To stimulate - because constantly the audience is trying to work out what is happening in each scene even though they are switching quickly. That makes the audience want to know what's going on and keep them guessing, also in suspence.

4) Does the cutting seem manipulative or are we left to interpret the images on our own?
We are left to interpret the images ourselves, I think mainly because the film is silent so they cannot actually tell you what is going on within the images, so we are left with different interpritations and thoughts going through our heads.

5) What kind of rhythm does the editing establish with each scene?
The editing moves quickly with the fast pace of the music's rhythm, also therefore hints at the surreal aspect of the film because everything that is going on in the scenes cannot be possible within that short space of time using the same characters.

6) Is the personality of the filmmaker apparent in the cutting or is the presentation of shots relatively objective and functional?


7) Is editing a major language system of the movie or does the film artist relegate cutting to a relatively minor fraction?

How do they convey the sense of reality of a hospital...

In clip1 the drama starts immediately when Efron says he has been shot and is panicking, and we can see blood on his top.

In clip2 the first 30 seconds, when they are operating on somebody in the hospital they don't seem interested as much as they should be, the concentration and their focus on the body is weak, they don't seem too bothered about what should be a serious matter. But then the drama heats up the slow pace when one of the customers starts shouting at the nurse.
